Why Your Small Business Needs to Post Consistent Content

When it comes to building up your small business, great content is more valuable than you can imagine. And great content is engaging, relevant, and consistent.

Truthfully, though, small businesses don’t have the reputation that larger, more established businesses have. So, they must do the extra work (posting engaging content consistently) to stand out and make an impact.

What you post is just as important as how often you post. And you should post often.

This is not all fluff speak. Statistics support the effectiveness of posting regularly. In fact, businesses that post consistently are worth 20% more than those that don’t.

So, what are some of the benefits of sharing content on a regular basis?

Consistent content…

…builds trust.

Have you ever gone to a business’ social media page and they had just one or two posts or hadn’t posted in several months or even the past year? Yes – sounds sketchy, I know.

Some of the questions that probably ran through your mind were, “is the business even legit? Are they a scam?”

Inconsistent or infrequent content can come off as if the business itself is not up and running, especially when compared to larger, more established companies that post across their channels on a daily and weekly basis.

If you want to appear as if you’re still in business, then you must post content consistently.

…helps you stand out among competitors.

Competition is high these days. If you want to shine among companies similar to yours, then you need to capture your competitor’s audience. You do that by engaging them and having thoughtful conversations with them.

For example, if you post regularly on social media, then that gives your audience (and your competitor’s audience) the chance to respond to and communicate on your posts.

If you blog often, then people can comment on your blog post or share it (and comment on it online).

An engaged audience is an interested audience. And an interested audience is more likely to lead to brand loyalists – or people who repeatedly turn to your brand for solutions, products, and services.

…establishes a relationship with your customers.

The one thing you need as a small business is a strong relationship with your customers. This is one aspect that sets small businesses apart from large ones (think of a small corner store versus Target).

This means constantly communicating with and sharing thoughtful ideas with the people who turn to your brand. If your customers only get a social media post from you once a month, they’re more likely to forget about your brand and your products. They’ll no longer think of your brand as engaging.

On the flip side, if your customers see you share thoughtful and engaging content on a weekly basis, they’ll keep your name front of mind. They’ll feel as though you care about them because you are constantly engaging with them through social media posts or other media.

Make sense?

What types of content should I post?

You should post content regularly on your customer-facing channels, including:

  • blogs
  • email newsletters
  • social media posts (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, just to name a few)
  • SMS messages

How often should I post content?

This all depends on the platform. Blogs should have new content four times per week.

I agree with other experts that too many emails can irk people. Aim for one email newsletter a week to stay on the safe, non-annoying side.

Text messages are quite personal, too, so these can be less frequent. A text once a week is all you need to engage customers, unless you’re alerting them about a sale or another major update.

Social media posts are different because people aren’t getting these posts directly. And social media users are constantly checking their accounts, so they’re expecting new content.

You can amp up how often you post on your social channels. Daily or even multiple times throughout the day is good.
